This February, the Toronto Vintners Club hosted an unforgettable evening dedicated to one of the world’s most beloved varietals—Merlot. The event was not just about tasting wine, but about immersing members and guests in the deep, layered stories of Merlot’s rich heritage.

Members and guests were greeted with a glass of Southbrook 2019 Triomphe Chardonnay. This elegant wine captivated with its bright, golden color and fresh aromas of citrus, green apple, and subtle notes of toasted oak. On the palate, the wine was crisp, with refreshing acidity balanced by hints of ripe pear and creamy texture, leading to a long, mineral finish. It was the perfect introduction to the evening—both complex and approachable.

After the reception, the spotlight turned to Sean Sydney, a guest speaker who brought Merlot to life. Sean took guests on a journey through the varietal’s storied history and unique characteristics. From its origins in Bordeaux, France, to its expression in regions across the globe, Merlot’s adaptability and velvety texture were highlighted. Members and guests learned how Merlot’s flavors of plum, black cherry, and chocolate evolve in different terroirs, with each glass offering a glimpse into the region’s climate, soil, and winemaking traditions.

Following Sean’s presentation, guests were invited to sample a selection eight of Merlot wines, each showcasing the grape’s versatility. With a range of styles from Napa Valley, Pomerol, and Tuscany, to the cooler Okanagan Valley, there was something for every palate. The wines were paired with an array of appetizers designed to enhance the tasting experience. As everyone sipped and savored, they marveled at the diversity of flavors Merlot offers. Whether bold and structured or smooth and supple, each wine was a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the winemaker.

As the evening drew to a close, it was time for everyone to share their thoughts. Members and guests had the chance to rank the wines, and the results were clear—the 2020 Duckhorn Three Palms Vineyard Merlot from Napa Valley emerged as the group’s favorite. This wine was the star of the evening, earning high praise for its elegance and complexity. On the nose, it enticed with aromas of fresh cranberry, huckleberry, and crushed rose petals, followed by a touch of graham cracker. The palate was a mesmerizing blend of black fig, cocoa powder, and lush berry flavors, complemented by a sophisticated minerality. Its long, resonant finish left a lasting impression, making it the perfect expression of Napa’s terroir.

The night was a wonderful reminder of why Merlot continues to captivate wine lovers across the globe. As the event concluded, guests were already discussing their next tasting adventure—after all, Merlot is a varietal that never fails to impress, and there’s always more to explore.

Cheers to Merlot, and to the next great tasting at Toronto Vintners Club!
